When you arrive in Meritxell, and you park your car just in front the Hotel L’Ermita, your eyes are surprised by the large building of dark stone which is closed to you. What is it? Some of you already know it, but for many of our customers, it is the first visual contact with the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Meritxell, patron saint of the Principality of Andorra.
This is a large modern building, built in 1975 by the Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill, and behind which lies the small Romanesque church of the sixteenth century, which was completely burned on the night of 8 September 1972 and was later restored like the original one between 1991 and 1994.
Since summer 2014, The Sanctuary of Meritxell is part of Ruta Mariana, a route composed by five sanctuaries, important centers of Marian devotion: El Pilar (Zaragoza), Torreciudad (Huesca), Lourdes (France), Montserrat (Barcelona) and Meritxell itself (Principality of Andorra).
